The Spring of Siti Zubaidah

One day, the great Caliph of the Islamic empire, Harun al-Rashid said to one of his wisest ministers,"Do my people love me?" The minister replied ," suggest that Your Majesty invite all your people to this palace and let them take whatever they wish. Your majesty will get the answer."

And so, the Caliph held an open day as suggested .So many people came and took whatever they liked from the Caliph's palace-chairs ,carpets ,pillows, crookery, foodstuff and everything else.

Among the thousands who came ,there was a young lady who did not take anything.Instead she came to the Caliph and said ,"I don't want anything except the Caliph himself."

Now the Caliph knew who , among his people that loved him most. The next day, he said to his minister,"Go to her house and tell her that I want to marry her."

The minister went to the lady's house and told her of the Caliph's intention .The lady replied,"I shall marry the Caliph if he gives me a block of solid gold."

The Caliph agreed easily ,"I can give her even a palace of gold, let alone a single block!" And as soon their wedding took place.

After the wedding , the Caliph's new bride wasted no time.Far from spending the Caliphs wealth for her own enjoyment, she sold the block of gold and used the money to build a channel for the people in Mecca.Until today, it is being greatly used.

This witty wife also helped Caliph Harun in various other state matters. She was truly a good wife and partner to the Caliph. Adored by her people, they named the channel after her-The Spring of Siti Zubaidah.
