The Theory of Etiology

(the set of factors that contributes to the occurrence of a disease)

There are six Causes:

1) Air – Air is essential to keep the self evenly balanced, for as long as air remains pure, no debility is mixed within it, and no impure wind.It is an invisisble protection.

  • Each season produces diseases compatible with it,
  • and expels what is incompatible.
  • Thus , summer cause bile and results in bilious diseases,
  • but cures cold deseases. And the like can be said of other seasons.
  • Cold air is strengthening , and improves the digestion.
  • Hot air has just the reverse effect.. A change in the air is a cause of pestilence*

2) Causes of Food and Drink,

  • When hot, these produce heat in the body,
  • and vice versa.

3) Cause is Bodily Movement and Rest,

  • Movement causes warmth in the body,
  • and vice versa

4) The fourth cause is Emotional

  • Movement and Rest,
  • Movement causes of anger,
  • joy , anxiety , grief and shame.

These states set the self in motion –

  • certainly inwardly ,
  • but outwardly,
  • so the sleeper needs some outer covering.
  • Wakefulness is just the opposite of this.

5) The fifth cause is Waking and Sleeping,

  • Sleep makes the self bubble within the-body ,
  • although it cools it outwardly,
  • so the sleeper needs some outer covering.
  • Wakefulness is just the opposite of this.

6) The sixth cause is Emission and Retention.

  • A balance between these protects health.

Theory of sign in a Man

1) Black hair and black body are signs of

  • Heat
  • and opposite a sign of cold.

2) Similarly , with a fat body or a thin body .

  • an excess flesh is a sign of heat combined with wetness.

3) For sleep is a sign of wetness,

  • whereas a diminished desire is a sign of dryness.
  • a moderate desire is the sign of a balanced temperament.

4) similarly, the appearance of the organs in a sign.

  • Capacious organs are a sign of hotness ,
  • And the opposite a sign of coldness.

5) In the same way, dreams indicate temperaments.

  • Seeing colours like yellow or red,Or flashes of light,

all these are signs of hotness

  • and the opposite a sign of coldness.
  • Again , excess of body odour is a sign of heat,
  • And lack of it is a sign of coldness.
And when I am sick, then He heals me.(Qur'an: 26:80)
