First off, search engine optimization is a big phrase but do not be intimidated by it. It is a very powerful method that will get your website a lot of traffic if done correctly for little or no cost.
I refer to SEO as the method of making your site relevant for a given topic so that search engines place your site high in searches for that topic. It is a lengthy process that takes a lot of hard work and patience but the dividends are worth it, trust me.
A good place to start is to look at websites that already rank high for their keywords, and work backwards. See what features those sites have that probably contributed to their high ranking. Does that site have a lot of content that is updated regularly? Do they have a lot of links? A blog? What do all of the highest ranked sites have in common? By mirroring the format (but never copying content, of course) of sites already ranked high, you can't lose.
Once you have picked out this search term you want to include this term in the "title tag" of your webpage. The title tag simply tells search engines what the title of that webpage is so that it helps to index your webpage. Most programs that you will use to design your website will tell you where to enter the title tag when designing your website. If you are having a professional do it for you then you want to tell them the title tag you want to use.
But for now, you have a lot of work to do on the basics. The advanced stuff can come later. Relative to the advanced SEO, getting the basics right is the most powerful move you can make because you are going from zero to moving up in rankings by, many times, tens of thousands of spaces in a relatively short time.

However, avoid very long strings of keywords, keeping them to six words or less. Avoid repeating keywords more than once in the title bars, and make sure that identical words are not next to each other.
You should not focus on keyword density in search engine optimization. Back in the old days of search engine optimization, webmasters or someone performing search engine optimization would create a page, for example, for 'cheap left-handed electric guitar', and repeat these words many times because they think that the more you repeat the phrases, the more relevant the website will be.
