Beauty Routine

Did you know that the onset of cooler weather calls for a shift in your beauty routine? Yep, the cleansers needed for summer heat-induced oiliness are too harsh for the drier air of autumn, and our skin craves extra moisture to prepare for those chilly winds just around the corner. Plus now is the perfect time to sweep away those summer sun-damaged skin cells, so a gentle exfoliant is just the thing. Step smoothly into the change of season along with us. We’ve lined up a harvest of easy, natural kitchen-cupboard recipes for the three basics of great skincare-exfoliating, cleansing, and moisturizing-so your skin can be fresher, healthier and more youthful.

The three basic steps for good skincare are exfoliating to rid the skin of dead cells that block the lubricating effects of the dermis underneath, cleansing to get rid of makeup, dirt, and toxins from the environment, and moisturizing to keep skin plump, smooth and radiant.

Exfoliate

Bye-bye dead cells, hello lustrous fresh skin. This gentle formula will help you put your best face forward. Oats are soothing, honey is a humectant, applesauce contains gentle alpha-hyrodoxy fruit acids to loosen dead skin cells, brown sugar gently exfoliates, and olive oil moisturizes. All in all, a delicious treat for your skin.

Soothing Honey Oat Scrub
1/4 cup rolled oats
1/4 cup honey
2 table spoons apple sauce
2 table spoons brown sugar
Olive oil to moisten

Stir ingredients together, adding olive oil until mixture is a creamy and spreadable consistency. Wash face as usual, then apply scrub to damp face, gently massaging for a few minutes. Rinse with warm water and pat dry.

Cleanse

In the hot days, we needed relief from that hot-weather greasy feeling: heat increases perspiration, which disperses skin oils. But now it’s a different story, so here are two sweet ideas to cleanse your skin gently:

1. Organic grapes. Just cut a seedless organic grape in half and gently rub both halves on your face, then rinse with warm water. The alpha-hydroxy acids will help to renew and refresh your skin.

2. Yogurt. Apply plain yogurt to your face, then rinse with warm water. Lactic acid gently cleanses, while probiotics nourish.

Moisturize

It is so much easier to prevent dry, aged-looking skin than it is to fix it once it has happened. Here are two of our favorite ways to keep skin plump, moist, and smooth.

1. Honey and yogurt. (We like to use Greek-style yogurt for this formula, since the consistency is thicker; just place the contents of a large container of plain yogurt in a colander or strainer lined with cheesecloth. Allow to drain for an hour. The thickened yogurt remaining in the colander is Greek-style yogurt.) Mix equal parts honey and yogurt until smooth and apply to clean skin, allowing to remain in place for up to 30 minutes. Rinse with warm water and pat dry.

2. Olive oil. Mediterranean beauties have known about this one for millennia, and it’s so easy: Just spread a little olive oil on clean skin before bed (you may want to cover your pillowcase with a towel).
