Babies need at least 16 hours of sleep a day on everage but by the time we are into childhood, seven or eight hours a night is enough.It isn’t really for our bodies that we sleep ; it is the brain that needs recharging. The adrenal gland secrets a hormone , cortesol, and  the levels of this hormone in the blood relate to periods of wakefulness and sleep.

Dreaming is an essential part of sleep, dreams manufacture chemicals needed for intellectual functioning . Dreaming takes place at least four times at night during quite light sleep . This coincides with REM-rapid eye movement . Women seem to suffer from insomnia more than men . Maybe this is because most women find that their agenda of life , children , work , housekeeping, continues on into the night after they have gone to continues on into the night  after they have gone to bed.

The slower you can make  your breathing , the nearer you are to sleep and slower your pulse rate will be. To help you to do this , you can concentrate on relaxing various parts of your body.

Start with your forehead and relax a frown , relax muscles of the jaw, chin and neck. Make your arm s feel limp. Become aware of  the pressure of yor torso lying on the bed and then gradually down your legs until they are completely relaxed, including your toes. Many people find this process is soporific that they are asleep before they get to their feet.Another trick is to empty your mind and think about a favourite thing. Mine is black velvet . Every time another thought creeps in , concentrate on the favourite thing again. This is an almost infallible cure for going without sleep.Used lavender diluted oils under soul of feet.To use, apply a small amount of balm to the wrists, neck and the back of the ears. Rub a tiny amount onto hair for a long lasting perfume.Get  a cup or two –lavender herbal tea or chamomile herbal tea. Get your Zzzz.
