Natural Hair Spray Recipe
Hair spray often contains plastic and other chemical ingredients that are less than ideal to be breathing! Fortunately, there is a homemade alternative that works!
A friend told me about this recipe, and I’ve found it to be very impressive; it really holds hair well.
Light and Lemon Hair Spray
2 to 4 lemons
Water
Slice the lemons and cover with water in a pan. Simmer for 1 hour, adding more water as it evaporates. Let cool, then strain. Pour the lemon liquid into a pump spray bottle.
Makes 2 to 3 cups.
Shelf life: About one week refrigerated.
Homemade Hair Mousse – Formula
Homemade Hair Mousse is easy to make, all n/atural, and it works!
Here are the simple directions:
INGREDIENTS
2 egg whites
1. Beat the egg whites until they hold stiff peaks.
2. Rub into hair and allow to dry, then style.
Makes enough for one treatment.
Or you can use plain aloe vera gel to style or hold hair. Just add a dab to damp hair.
Simple Hairspray – Formula
The heat is on in our homes and offices, and the air outdoors is cold and dry. This can spell big trouble for our poor abused tresses: flyaway hair is everywhere! If your hair could use a little soothing help, try this one-ingredient hairspray. Unlike commercial hairspray products which often contain harmful toxic chemical ingredients, this is totally n/atural. It smells so fresh and clean, is super-simple to make and use, and works like a charm to tame those flyaway locks!
Find out the easy directions here:
INGREDIENTS
2 teaspoons dried rosemary
boiling water to cover
1. Place the rosemary in a coffee mug and cover with the boiling water. Allow to steep for several hours, then strain the liquid into a spray/spritz bottle.
2. Spritz onto dry hair.
Makes about 1 cup of spray. Will keep for a week, if refrigerated.
Easy Green Hair Gel
Hair gel can be a lifesaver: sometimes a dab is the only thing that will fix a bad haircut or a bad hair day. But commercial hair gels smell pretty terrible and they contain suspect chemicals, so what can we do? Try this couldn’t-be-easier formula instead! There is only one simple ingredient needed for this green and easy hair gel.
1. The secret ingredient in make-it-yourself hair gel is softened soap. Just be sure that the soap you buy is all-natural and scented with pure essential oils: my personal favorite is clear glycerin soap.
2. Grate some soap into a bowl, add a little water (the less water you add, the thicker the gel will be) and allow the soap to soften completely.
3. Apply sparingly to damp hair, unless you want to punk out in spikes, in which case–glob it on!
Flax Seeds for Setting Hair, Body Scrubs, and Dry Skin
Flax seeds have interesting chemical attributes, also, which makes them
great for everything from egg substitutes, to body scrubs, to a perfect
and perfectly pure hair setting lotion! Here are some easy, do-it-
yourself formulas.
HAIR SETTING LOTION
Flax seed gel can be used successfully to help set hair.
¾ cup water
1 tablespoon flax seed
Combine the water and flax seeds in a small pan, and bring to a boil. Simmer until the mixture is gelatinous (about 10 to 15 minutes). Strain out as many seeds as you can. Dip a comb into the gel, and comb through the hair before setting with curlers or pins.
FLAX SKIN LOTION
Flax seeds make for a very softening gel for the skin.
1 cup filtered water
1 tablespoon flax seeds
1 teaspoon vegetable glycerin
1 tablespoons aloe vera gel (optional)
Combine water and flax seeds in a small pan, bring to a boil, and simmer until the mixture is thickened. Remove from the heat and strain out as many seeds as you can. Add the glycerin, and blend with a hand mixer. Refrigerate, and discard after a week.
Variation: Make a simple gel by just boiling together the flax seeds and water, and skipping the other ingredients.
AFTERSHAVE GEL
Make the flax seed lotion, but eliminate the glycerin, and add a drop or two of pure essential oil fragrance, if desired.
EGG SUBSTITUTE
For an egg substitute, use the same recipe as hair setting lotion. The recipe is the equivalent of one egg. (Although this isn’t a body care formula, it is a great one to have, so I thought I’d pass it on with the rest of these flax recipes!)
Sweet Hair Spray Formula
Our hair can suffer from end-of-winter blahs just like us, feeling limp, lifeless, and squashed from hiding out under a hat.
What to do? Most commercial hair sprays are nasty, but we need some shape and hold for our static-ridden, winter-weary tresses.
Well, here’s some great news! This easy to make formula really gives body and shape to flat or flyaway hair. You’ll be totally surprised by the main ingredient: who knew? But it works. Sweet!
INGREDIENTS
1 tablespoon sugar
1 cup hot purified water
1 tablespoon vodka (optional)
3-5 drops essential oil of your choice (optional)
TO MAKE
Dissolve the sugar in the hot water. Stir thoroughly to dissolve, then add the vodka and essential oil. Any leftovers should be stored in a cool, dry place and used within one week.
TO USE
For setting and molding: Work this solution through damp hair for firm hold.
As a hair spray: Put the liquid in a bottle with a meriting mechanism or in an atomizer. You will have to rinse the nozzle under hot water after each use to avoid clogs. Lightly mist your hair. When used on dry hair, this spray can be wet. Don’t run your fingers or a brush through your hair until the sugar solution dries.
To thicken: Dissolve the 1 tablespoon of sugar in 6 tablespoons of hot water for a solution with more thickening power. Punkers, take note: You can sculpt your hair into amazing shapes if you use enough sugar in this formula!
Yield: 5-10 applications, depending on type of usage.
