Dysmenorrhoea - Painful Periods Description

In some women , the cramping pains experienced as the uterus contracts during menstruation can be incapacitating.

Possible cause

Heredity, lack of exercise, being fitted with an IUD, a fall in blood calcium levels (common prior to a during menstruation) .Severe pain may be symptomatic of gynecological disorder such as endometriosis.

Aggravated by: Stress, poor nutrition.

Suggested herbal remedies

Cramp bark (decoction), chamomile, marigold (calendula), chaste tree (available in tablet form under its botanical name Vitex agnus-cactus)

Nutritional supplements

If caused by low calcium levels, a specially formulated vitamin and mineral supplement may help. ‘Premenstrual’ packs are widely available from chemists and health shops. Take evening primrose oil (1000 milligrams twice daily) two days before the usual onset of symptoms until day two of your period , to help balance .

Further suggestions

Attention to diet and lifestyle. Severe menstrual cramp must be investigated by medical practitioner, perhaps followed up with holistic treatment from a qualified practitioner.

Aromatherapy Methods of use

Essential oils- Clary sage, cypress, lavender .

Bath, warm sitz baths , warm compress (abdomen), massage (feathering stroking down wards over abdomen), also regularly full-body as a preventive measure.

For pain such as that associated with dysmenorrheal, cause by excessive prostaglandin production. Excessive prostaglandin is believed to be the caused of contraction-like pains experienced during menstruation.

Exercise can be helpful; deep breathing and relaxation techniques bring relief of tension and improve insomnia. Swimming will often do the same.
